Decarbonising the NHS

Decarbonising the NHS refers to the National Health Service’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint to address climate change and improve public health outcomes. As one of the largest employers and healthcare providers in the world, the NHS in England aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by two key target dates:

2040: For emissions directly controlled by the NHS (such as energy usage and fleet vehicles).
2045: For emissions the NHS can influence, like those from its supply chain.

Why Decarbonisation Matters

Climate and Health Link: Climate change exacerbates health issues, increasing the demand for NHS services due to air pollution, heatwaves, and extreme weather events. Environmental Responsibility: The NHS is a significant contributor to the UK’s carbon emissions, particularly through energy use, transportation, and waste.

Progress and Challenges

The NHS has already made strides in reducing its emissions, such as increasing energy efficiency and introducing low-emission vehicles. However, challenges remain, including funding, technological barriers, and aligning the entire supply chain with sustainability goals.

Decarbonising the NHS is not just about meeting carbon targets; it’s about building a healthcare system that is resilient, sustainable, and capable of providing high-quality care in a changing climate.
